I own thoroughbred yearlings bred for racing. I have owned and raced thoroughbreds for over 30 years. My husband has been a trainer for over 40 years. We have also had broodmares as well.

The only girls then were pony girls and once in a while an exercise girl, but that was rare. There were only a small handfull of female trainers and they were usually the daughters of someone who owned horses. It certainly is a different world now much to the improvement of a lot of the horse care. Still wish there were more women trainers in the limelight instead of behind the scenes.
Well , you are bringing names back from the past. I know Bobby Frankel --sold or at least dealt some of his TB off the track to the H/J industry and I think also we did some BioScan stuff with him too when Nadine Murdock was still running BioScan. If you were working for him in 1972 , then we might have crossed paths at the track as far as horses go as we shipped them to Hollywood, Santa Anita, Bay Meadows and even down into Mexico. There were not a lot of girls back then, so i was always on the look out for another female face.
Dear Susan: OK you should have a TB weanling picture as your picture if you don't want one of yourself. You would probably be interested in my articles and information on stress in horses. I worked with TB growing up in California and had the honor of riding Hilary and starting his off spring Hill Top, Hill Clown and others for George Pope --back in the 60-70-s --what great horses --the ones who did not run, I would re-train for H/J and kept my jumper friends supplied with fantastic horses. I worked through the years for various trainers and vets with various race horses, mostly doing communication and equine psychology to help them determine how to enhance performance. There is so much stress on horses especially fillies being sold an separated from their friends because in the wild mares rarely leave their herd unless recruited by another stallion. Oh --there I go again on my soap box --I teach a lot and hence my focus is education . You can check out some of the information at www.mystichorse.com. So I have ridden since I was 5 and have done mostly jumpers, dressage and racing--I was one of the first exercise riders at Golden Gate Fields on the West Coast in California back in 1970 -71. Now I just write, teach and share horse stories with friends. That's why I want to develop this site so other women can share their history, wisdom and stories with the next generation of horse girls. Would love to have your insights or stories in the forum.
Welcome Susan: Great to have some TB racing folks on board. Where are you located? Do you know Stacey Small in New Jersey ? She has race horses and runs Equilite an herbal company which started out as products for race horses and grew into all horses. She is also a member.
